The invention and origins of vadapav

Vada Pav is one of the most popular street foods in India, especially in Mumbai. It is often called the “Indian burger” because it consists of a spicy potato fritter placed inside a bread bun.
The invention of Vada Pav dates back to the 1960s and 1970s. It is widely believed that Ashok Vaidya first started selling it near Dadar railway station. At that time, many mill workers and commuters needed a quick, cheap, and filling meal. Vaidya placed a hot potato vada inside a pav (bread roll) and served it with chutneys and fried green chilies.
The idea quickly became popular because it was affordable, tasty, and easy to eat while traveling. Soon, street vendors across Mumbai began selling Vada Pav, and it became a symbol of the city’s fast-paced lifestyle.
Today, Vada Pav is not just limited to Mumbai. It is enjoyed all over India and even internationally. Despite many modern variations, the classic combination of spicy potato vada, soft pav, and flavorful chutneys remains a favorite among food lovers.
